A K-Pop Night, UFC 329, and an Unexpected Family Memory

Written by Shane Smith | Jul 15, 2026 1:18:49 PM

Some weeks seem to have a little bit of everything.

This one included a post-holiday rush at the office, a quiet dinner with Holly, a night in downtown Atlanta, K-pop music, soccer, UFC fights, a family goodbye, and an unexpected discovery buried inside an old box of CDs.

Individually, none of those things seem connected. By the end of the weekend, however, they came together as a reminder that some of the smallest moments can influence the direction of our lives.

A Quiet Wednesday Night

Holly and I will often meet Sam for dinner during the week, but he was busy this time. Instead, the two of us went out on our own.

After dinner, we stopped by the bookstore, which is always one of Holly’s favorite places to visit. It was not a complicated evening, but it was a nice break in the middle of a busy week.

A Night in Downtown Atlanta

On Friday, Holly and I headed downtown and stayed at the Hyatt.

That is also where we stay during Dragon Con, so it was interesting to walk through the Hyatt and the connected Marriott without the huge convention crowds.

During Dragon Con, the hotels are packed, furniture is moved, and thousands of people are walking through the hallways. On a normal weekend, the buildings feel completely different.

We ate at the restaurant inside the Hyatt, which has become one of our favorite places downtown. We used to eat at High Velocity in the Marriott more often, but lately, we have preferred the restaurant at the Hyatt.

Our K-Pop DJ Night

Later that night, we went to the Masquerade for a K-pop DJ event.

Since it started late, Holly and I took a nap before heading over. It helped, but we were still ready to leave by around 11:30 or midnight.

I was surprised by how many songs neither of us recognized, especially since Holly listens to a lot of K-pop. Even so, the music was fun, the crowd had plenty of energy, and we enjoyed doing something different.

We returned home Saturday morning.

Saying Goodbye to Noah

Noah had been staying with us over the Fourth of July, along with his cats. When we arrived home, he was getting ready to drive back to North Carolina.

We were glad we made it back in time to say goodbye before he left.

The house always feels a little quieter after one of the boys heads home, especially when the cats leave with them.

Soccer and UFC

Once Noah was on the road, we settled in for an afternoon and evening of sports.

Holly has suddenly become a fan of Norway’s soccer team, so we watched their game and rooted for them. They did not win, but it was still an exciting match.

After soccer, we moved on to the UFC fights.

Most of the fights we watched were very good. I was especially excited to see Paddy Pimblett compete. I am a big Paddy fan, and he quickly took control of his opponent and finished the fight with a submission.

As soon as he locked it in, it did not look like there was any way out.

Unfortunately, the final fight of the night was much more disappointing. Conor McGregor suffered a knee injury and was unable to continue against Max Holloway.

A friend had previously talked to me about traveling to see the fight live because he is a huge McGregor fan. I decided not to go because I was worried something might happen or the fight would not live up to the excitement.

After seeing how quickly it ended, I was glad I had stayed home.

The Forgotten CD

The most unexpected moment of the weekend happened while Holly and I were cleaning out one of the closets near the front of the house.

Inside, I found a box of old CDs. One of them featured Nido Qubein and had been given to me at a Dan Kennedy event many years ago.

I originally placed it in the box and forgot about it.

Years later, when Noah first started looking at colleges, I pulled the CD back out. It made me think about High Point University, so we decided to put the school on the list and learn more about it.

That small discovery helped begin our family’s journey to High Point, North Carolina, where the boys eventually found their college community.

It is strange to think that something sitting forgotten in a box could eventually play a role in such an important family decision.

Final Thoughts

The weekend had a little bit of everything: a busy return to work, a quiet dinner, downtown Atlanta, K-pop, soccer, UFC, and time with family.

Finding that old CD was a good reminder that we do not always recognize important moments when they first happen.

Something that seems small or unimportant today may eventually lead your family somewhere completely unexpected. Sometimes it takes cleaning out an old closet to realize just how far one small decision has taken you.
