Behind the Scenes of Our Annual Attorney Retreat

Written by Shane Smith | Apr 1, 2026 12:06:12 PM

Every year, we do something a little different.

We take some of our top-performing attorneys and their spouses on a trip. It is not always a cruise. Sometimes it is a resort or another destination. But one thing stays the same. The team votes, and we go where they choose.

This year, the choice was a cruise with Royal Caribbean. And it turned into a week that was equal parts fun, connection, and perspective.

A Floating City with 6,000 People

The ship itself was massive. Think less “boat” and more “moving city.”

There was a central boardwalk area that ran through the middle, filled with restaurants, shops, and greenery. It gave the entire space a unique energy. You could walk through it and almost forget you were in the middle of the ocean.

Everywhere you looked, there was something happening. Pools, shows, activities, and more food options than anyone could realistically try in a week.

The Little Details That Stood Out

Sometimes it is not the big things that make an experience memorable. It is the small, unexpected touches.

Every day, housekeeping would fold towels into different animals. Not just simple shapes. Detailed, creative designs. It was so impressive they even sold a book on how to do it.

There is a good chance that information is online somewhere. But in the moment, it felt like something worth bringing home.

Entertainment That Overdelivered

The shows were surprisingly strong.

An ice skating performance stood out right away. It was polished, fast-paced, and far better than most people expect on a cruise ship. There is even a fun fact floating around that Royal Caribbean employs a large number of Olympic-level skaters.

There was also a high diving show that exceeded expectations. It combined athleticism with choreography in a way that made it one of the highlights of the trip.

Other performances included a Michael J. Fox musical and a popular Elvis tribute show that consistently filled up. Even the shows you did not see created buzz among the group.

Activities for Every Personality

Not everyone approaches a trip the same way.

Some people want to relax. Others want to stay active.

The ship had a FlowRider surf simulator that drew a crowd. While not everyone participated, it was a constant source of energy and entertainment.

There were also quieter moments. Watching planes land during an excursion. Spotting hidden ducks around the ship, part of a fun cruise tradition. Even stumbling across chickens wandering around during a stop on one of the islands.

It was a mix of structured activity and unexpected moments.

The Views You Do Not Forget

One of the most consistent highlights was simple.

The sunsets.

There is something different about watching the sun drop below the horizon when you are surrounded by open water. It slows things down. It creates space to think, reflect, and just be present.

Those moments tend to stick with people long after the trip ends.

Why These Trips Actually Matter

This is not just about taking a break.

Trips like this serve a bigger purpose.

They create connection outside of the office. They allow people to build relationships without deadlines, emails, or pressure. That translates directly into how teams work together when they get back.

It also gives people a chance to reset. Not necessarily rest, because there is plenty to do, but to shift perspective.

And when people return, they come back ready to move forward.

Back to Work, But Different

By the end of the week, everyone had experienced something a little different.

Some leaned into the activities. Others enjoyed the slower moments. But across the board, the feedback was the same.

It was worth it.

Not just for the experience, but for what it did for the team.

Everyone came back focused, energized, and ready to get back to work.

Final Thought

Success is not just about what happens in the office.

It is about how people connect, recharge, and grow together outside of it.

That is what this trip delivered.
