The mornings have gotten cooler, Luna has a little more energy on her walks, and Halloween is already starting to feel close. At the same time, we are trying to squeeze in a little more pool time before the season ends. Between a final Parents Weekend at High Point, getting ready for Halloween, and another stretch of travel, the week seemed to move pretty quickly. ## Feeling the Start of Fall ![Image-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-0273-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-0273-PM.jpg?width=200&height=267&name=Image-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-0273-PM.jpg)One of the first things I noticed this week was the change in the weather. There is a crispness in the air now, especially early in the morning when I take Luna for a walk. She definitely prefers it. During the hottest part of the summer, she would get warm pretty quickly. Now she has more energy, more bounce in her step, and sometimes acts a little more like a puppy again. It has been fun watching her enjoy the cooler temperatures. ## Trying to Get a Little More Pool Time ![Image (1)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-1240-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(1)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-1240-PM.jpg?width=200&height=267&name=Image%20(1)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-1240-PM.jpg)Even though fall is here, we are not quite ready to give up on the pool. We have been trying to get a little more use out of it before the weather gets too cold. Holly’s parents came over this week and spent some time on the porch with Holly and Luna. They also got into the pool for a little while. The water is definitely starting to feel cooler, but we are trying to stretch the season as long as we can. There is always that strange period in Georgia where the afternoons can still feel warm enough for summer activities even though the mornings already feel like fall. ## Getting Ready for Halloween ![Image (2)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-2272-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(2)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-2272-PM.jpg?width=220&height=293&name=Image%20(2)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-2272-PM.jpg)Halloween is also approaching quickly. It has always been one of our favorite times of the year. Halloween was one of the first holidays that Holly and I really started celebrating at our own house instead of going to one of our parents’ homes. Over the years, we have collected a lot of decorations and turned it into a pretty big event. We have also done the haunted house, which has become part of the tradition. This year, Holly found a witch’s cauldron crock pot and ordered it. It arrived this week, which feels like a pretty good sign that Halloween season has officially started at our house. Every year there seems to be one more decoration or themed item added to the collection. ## Another Parents Weekend at High Point ![Image (4)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-34-5379-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(4)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-34-5379-PM.jpg?width=250&height=188&name=Image%20(4)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-34-5379-PM.jpg)We also traveled to High Point for Parents Weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This was our seventh Parents Weekend, which is difficult for me to believe. We have been making these trips for years now, and suddenly we are getting close to the end of that chapter. We mostly went to enjoy being back on campus and spend some time there. High Point always does a great job creating an atmosphere around Parents Weekend. ## A Visit to the High Point Bookstore ![Image (3)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-2775-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(3)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-2775-PM.jpg?width=200&height=267&name=Image%20(3)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-33-2775-PM.jpg)One of the things Holly and I always enjoy is walking through the bookstore and gift shop. There is usually new merchandise, and we like seeing what has changed since the last time we were there. Holly found a shirt that she thought would be perfect for Noah. We also took some pictures around campus, including both of us sitting on top of one of the giant panther statues. Those are the kinds of little traditions that become part of the experience after you visit the same place enough times. ## A Last-Minute Change to the Concert High Point also had a concert scheduled during Parents Weekend. There was an opening cover band followed by a Beach Boys tribute band. Unfortunately, the second band became sick and had to cancel at the last minute. Instead of ending the concert early, the opening band simply played longer. It was not the original plan, but it still ended up being a fun evening. Sometimes events do not go exactly as expected, and everyone just has to adjust. ## Still Thinking About That Pokémon Machine ![Image (6)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-34-0909-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(6)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-34-0909-PM.jpg?width=175&height=233&name=Image%20(6)-Sep-30-2026-01-03-34-0909-PM.jpg)I also wanted to include the Pokémon card vending machine we saw at the airport recently. I know I mentioned it before, but it still seems strange to me. It was literally a vending machine filled with Pokémon cards sitting inside the airport. Pokémon cards have become such a big part of collecting again that I guess it makes sense, but I never expected to see them sold that way. It is one of those things that catches your attention simply because it feels unexpected. ## Another Week of Travel Ahead This week also felt quick because there has been so much travel lately. I have been trying to use the time at home to rest and get ready for the next trip. Next week, I will be heading to Charlotte. There are also still a couple of business trips coming up in October. I enjoy the travel when there is a good reason for it, but after several trips close together, I am definitely looking forward to the schedule slowing down a little. Sometimes the hardest part is simply getting back into a normal routine before it is time to pack again. ## Final Thoughts This week felt like the official transition from summer into fall. The cooler mornings have given Luna more energy, we are trying to squeeze in a few more days by the pool, and Halloween decorations are already starting to appear around the house. We also made another trip to High Point for Parents Weekend, which has become one of those family traditions that is slowly coming to an end. With Charlotte next and more travel scheduled for October, the next few weeks will probably stay busy. Still, it is nice to feel the seasons changing and start looking forward to everything that comes with fall. 📞 In pain?
