The biggest part of this past week was Halloween.

If you have followed these updates for a while, you know Halloween has always been a big holiday for Holly and me. It was one of the first holidays we really claimed as our own after getting married, and over the years it has turned into a pretty major tradition at our house.

We decorate the yard, build the haunted maze, dress up, and usually end up with a couple hundred kids coming through by the end of the night.

This year was no different.

## Building the Haunted Maze

![Image (16)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-43-6869-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(16)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-43-6869-PM.jpg?width=200&height=150&name=Image%20(16)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-43-6869-PM.jpg)The haunted maze has become one of the biggest parts of Halloween at our house.

We have been doing it for years now, and some of the neighborhood kids have gotten to the point where they look forward to seeing what we put together each year.

The setup itself takes quite a bit of work.

One of the local truck stores in Peachtree City saves large cardboard boxes for me, and I use those to create the walls of the maze.

![Image (23)-Nov-04-2026-01-56-02-9750-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(23)-Nov-04-2026-01-56-02-9750-PM.jpg?width=200&height=267&name=Image%20(23)-Nov-04-2026-01-56-02-9750-PM.jpg)Then we add tarps for the ceiling and dividers to create the different paths and sections.

It is definitely not something you build in five minutes.

There is a lot of moving boxes, connecting everything, figuring out the layout, and making sure people can actually move through it.

But once it is finished and the kids start coming through, it is always worth the effort.

## A Halloween Tradition That Keeps Growing

![Image (14)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-44-6986-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(14)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-44-6986-PM.jpg?width=300&height=225&name=Image%20(14)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-44-6986-PM.jpg)Halloween started as a holiday Holly and I simply enjoyed celebrating together.

Over time, it became something much bigger.

We accumulated more decorations, the maze became more elaborate, and eventually the neighborhood started expecting it every year.

This year, we probably had somewhere around 200 to 250 kids come by the house.

That is a lot of trick-or-treaters.

Seeing that many kids show up and enjoy something we have been doing for years makes all the preparation worthwhile.

It has become one of those traditions that feels like part of the neighborhood now, not just something Holly and I do for ourselves.

## Dressing as Dungeon Crawler Carl and Princess Donut

![Image (15)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-43-8199-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(15)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-43-8199-PM.jpg?width=200&height=267&name=Image%20(15)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-43-8199-PM.jpg)Holly and I also decided to go with a *Dungeon Crawler Carl* theme for our costumes this year.

I dressed as Carl, and Holly went as Princess Donut.

I have talked about the books before, so it seemed like a fun costume idea.

We were recognized by a few people, although probably not as many as we would have been if we had dressed as more mainstream characters.

That actually made it more fun when someone did recognize us.

There is something satisfying about having somebody immediately know exactly what you were going for.

## A Trip to the Comic Shop

![Image (21)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-44-3173-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(21)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-44-3173-PM.jpg?width=200&height=267&name=Image%20(21)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-44-3173-PM.jpg)Earlier in the week, Holly and I went with Sam to the comic shop.

While we were there, I saw some X-23 items that caught my attention.

She has been one of my favorite Marvel characters for a long time.

For anyone unfamiliar with her, she is closely connected to Wolverine and shares many of the same abilities.

Most people probably recognize her from *Logan*, where she appeared as a younger character who was extremely fierce and angry.

In the comics, she is generally older and has developed quite a bit beyond that version of the character.

I have always liked her, so seeing her at the comic shop was another small highlight of the week.

## Collecting More Ideas for the Ranch

![Image (19)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-6696-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(19)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-6696-PM.jpg?width=100&height=217&name=Image%20(19)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-6696-PM.jpg)Holly and I are also continuing to collect ideas for the house we eventually want to build on the ranch.

Apparently, my phone has figured that out because I am constantly getting advertisements for unusual home features.

One that caught my attention recently was a hidden medicine cabinet.

It looks like part of the wall but opens up to reveal storage behind it.

I have also seen similar designs for pantries, where the door blends into the wall or cabinetry so you would not necessarily realize there is another room behind it.

![Image (20)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-6161-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(20)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-6161-PM.jpg?width=100&height=217&name=Image%20(20)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-6161-PM.jpg)I keep saving pictures of these things.

Some may eventually make it into the house, while others probably will not.

At this point, my phone is filled with random pictures of doors, cabinets, plants, roofs, walls, and all kinds of other things that might be useful someday.

That seems to be part of the process.

## The Cleanup After Halloween

![Image (17)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-9401-PM](https://news.shanesmithlaw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Image%20(17)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-9401-PM.jpg?width=200&height=267&name=Image%20(17)-Nov-04-2026-01-55-42-9401-PM.jpg)Of course, what goes up has to come back down.

After Halloween was over, Saturday became cleanup day.

That meant taking apart the maze, removing the tarps, dealing with all the cardboard, and starting to get everything back to normal.

The cleanup is definitely less exciting than the setup.

Still, it is part of the tradition.

You spend days getting everything ready, enjoy one busy night with hundreds of kids, and then the next morning you start taking it all apart again.

By the time everything is cleaned up, you are usually tired enough to be perfectly fine waiting another year before doing it again.

## Final Thoughts

Halloween was definitely the highlight of the week.

Holly and I have been celebrating it together for years, but it has grown into something much bigger than we probably imagined when we first started decorating our house.

The haunted maze has become a neighborhood tradition, hundreds of kids came through again this year, and we got to have some fun dressing as Dungeon Crawler Carl and Princess Donut.

We also squeezed in a trip to the comic shop and continued collecting ideas for the ranch.

Then Saturday came, and it was time to tear everything back down.

It takes a lot of work to put Halloween together every year, but seeing families come back and kids excited about the maze makes it worth doing.

Now we just have to figure out what we are going to do next year.
