Hey, fun week for me—we went to Japan! This was a trip I had been looking forward to for a while,...
Meet LawBuBu: The Legal Monster You Didn’t Know You Needed
So this past week, I was home — no travel, no big events, just regular life. But honestly, those weeks are sometimes the most packed. This one had everything: cleaning up from a birthday party, learning AI stuff, setting some goals, watching a movie with the fam, a solid UFC fight night, and even a giant fungus discovery. So yeah, weird combo, but it was a week.
We kicked things off cleaning up after Holly’s birthday on the 4th of July. Between that and having friends and family over for the long weekend, the house looked like it threw a party and then tapped out.
I’m always shocked at how much trash gets produced when you’ve got people in and out — especially when my boys are in town. It’s like they generate garbage out of thin air. Paper plates, cups, snack wrappers, empty boxes, soda cans — and Sam had a few friends over too, so multiply that by ten. It’s not exciting, but it's real life. A mountain of trash later, we were back to semi-normal.
Tuesday I went in to get my labs done — just some routine blood work. I try to do that at least once a year, maybe twice if I’m really on top of it. As I’m getting older, I just think it’s important to keep an eye on that stuff. Cholesterol, liver, whatever else they test — I like knowing the numbers.
It’s not that exciting, but it’s one of those things that gives you peace of mind. Better to know than guess.
So I finally started playing around more seriously with ChatGPT. I know, I know — it’s everywhere, and my kids have been using it in school for months. But I figured it was time to see what it could really do.
And wow — I used it to help plan some dinner dates with friends, and it actually pulled some really solid recommendations for nacho places in Atlanta. It even suggested nearby activities and Airbnb spots. Honestly, it was super helpful. I didn’t expect it to be that good.
Then I used it to read and summarize some call transcripts from work. I had it analyze how our intake calls were going and give feedback. It’s wild what it can pick up on. There’s definitely something there — I just need to keep messing with it and learning what it can really do.
The end of the week was all about getting my goals in order. I was working with a couple groups on tracking and quarterly planning. I always think it’s important to know where you are now — not just where you want to be.
So I looked at a few different areas: health goals (like tying back to that lab work), lifting goals, and also business stuff. Trying to map out what I want this next quarter to look like. It’s easy to just jump into a new month and keep grinding — but stopping to set a few targets makes a big difference.
Friday night we went to see the new Superman movie. Sam came with us, and my wife joined too, so it turned into a little family night. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good movie.
There were some parts that felt like they were aimed at a younger crowd — not really my style, but not bad. One thing that stuck with me was a critique I’d read before seeing it. Someone said Lois Lane didn’t look “office chic” enough — like they were mad she wasn’t all done up. And sure enough, she just looked like a regular office worker. Totally fine, but funny that I wouldn’t have even noticed if someone hadn’t pointed it out.
Also, they poked fun at the whole Clark Kent glasses disguise thing — which was kind of funny. Overall, I thought it was solid. Not my favorite superhero (I was more into Batman as a kid), but Superman’s kind of the icon, so it’s always worth seeing.
Saturday night was UFC night. Two fighters I really like were on the card — Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Derrick Lewis.
Wonderboy’s been around forever. He’s a traditional martial artist, big on Taekwondo and striking, which is why I’ve always liked him — I did Taekwondo growing up, so I’ve got a soft spot for that style.
His fight went the distance — three rounds — and he looked good. Not amazing, but better than in recent fights. He won on one judge’s scorecard but lost on the others. I’m a little worried he’s getting pushed out of the top 15. He’s in his 40s now, and that’s old in fight years, even for someone as good as him.
Then there was Derrick Lewis — man, that guy is a trip. He’s just a character. Always doing wild stuff in and out of the ring. He once knocked a guy out with a spin kick, and this weekend he won in under a minute. Total chaos. Super entertaining to watch. The guy is built for highlight reels.
Sunday was more laid back. We went out to some land I bought just outside Peachtree City to check on the fence line and see how everything looked.
There used to be an old abandoned house and a dead well on the property — both of which we had to demo and remove before the county would let us move forward with anything. That part got done recently, so it was good to walk the land again and see the progress.
And while we were out there, I spotted this huge mushroom — or fungus — growing near a tree. I’m not even sure what it was exactly, but it was massive. Probably nothing special, but it looked wild. So yeah, now I’m a part-time fungus hunter, apparently.
Oh! And before I forget — after the Fourth of July weekend and all the summer chaos, we came up with something kind of ridiculous but fun: LawBuBu.
He’s based on these cute-but-creepy monster characters that are big in Japanese youth culture right now. We made our own version that talks about the law — like a mascot meets meme. He’s going to start showing up in some of our summer videos. Should be fun. If nothing else, he’ll get people’s attention.
So yeah — no vacations, no big travel, but definitely not a boring week. Sometimes staying home gives you the chance to slow down, look around, and get things done.
Cleaned the house, got my health stuff checked, tried out some new tech, watched a movie, caught some fights, walked the land, and found a weird mushroom. Oh, and created LawBuBu.
Pretty good week, honestly.
