Hey! So this week was a bit different for me because I left on Wednesday to head to Dragon Con in...
Our Frenchie Almost Lost an Eye—Here’s What Happened Next
Some weeks just pack in more than their fair share—and this was one of them.
It all started with our little guy, Mr. Ted. If you know us, you know Ted’s not just a dog—he’s family. He's a squishy-faced French Bulldog with a big personality, and last week, he had us all worried. He hurt his eye over the weekend, and by Monday, we were at the vet facing a tough decision: remove the eye or try to save it.
Honestly, that’s not a decision any pet owner wants to make. But after talking through the risks and options, we decided to go ahead with a surgery that would clean out the infection and apply what’s basically a tiny contact lens bandage—just like they do for humans. The hope was it would protect the eye long enough to heal.
We dropped him off that morning at 9 AM and waited. And waited. And waited some more.
It wasn’t until around 8 PM that the vet called and said they were just starting the procedure. So, yeah—long day for everyone, especially the vet. Surgery finished up around 10:30 that night, and thankfully, they said he did well. But with French Bulldogs, the anesthesia risk is no joke. Those short noses don’t mix well with being put under, and we were holding our breath the whole time.
Now, we were also trying to decide—was he going to come home as Mr. Ted… or would we be introducing "Mr. Ted the Pirate"? We even joked about buying him a tiny eye patch. But good news: he came through surgery with both eyes intact and some drops, pills, and a stylish cone.
We brought him home, and honestly, he handled it like a champ. You could tell he wasn’t happy about the cone, but he made it work. That first morning, I let him outside, and to my surprise, he walked straight to his water bowl and started drinking—with the cone still on. He had somehow figured it out on his own before I could even take it off for him. That’s grit.
Now here’s where it got even more complicated. I had a business conference scheduled in Miami starting midweek. Holly and I had already planned that she’d fly down and join me for the weekend part of it—but now with Ted recovering, we didn’t know what to do. Would he be okay? Would she be able to leave him?
After a lot of back-and-forth and monitoring Ted, we decided I would go ahead with the trip. We had a great college-aged friend who’s watched Ted and Luna before, and she graciously offered to stay at our house to take care of both of them. She’s awesome and gave us the peace of mind we needed.
So I flew to Miami Tuesday and jumped into three solid days of learning, brainstorming, and connecting with other business owners. This is a group I’ve been part of for a while—a lot of smart folks who are all trying to grow and improve their businesses. It’s always a refreshing reset, even if the days are long.
By Friday, Mr. Ted was still doing well, so Holly flew down as planned. We stayed at the Fontainebleau, which is definitely one of those flashy Miami hotels. Supposedly, UFC fighter Jon Jones was somewhere on the property that weekend. We never saw him, but it would've made a great story if we had!
That first night, we were tired, so we kept things simple and had dinner right at the hotel. The next day, we ventured out to Aventura Mall—this massive, three-story shopping center. We spent a good chunk of the day just wandering around. It’s the kind of place where you could blink and suddenly be inside a pop-up art gallery, or a Tesla showroom, or an entire wing of designer stores.
We ended up eating at this Japanese spot in the mall—once for an early lunch, and then again later for what I guess you’d call a second lunch or maybe a snack? Either way, it was good enough for a round two.
We had plans to go out that night, but after the week we’d had, crashing early sounded better than dressing up. Sometimes, rest is the real luxury.
We still got our entertainment though—there was a UFC card on that night, and we caught some of the early fights on a TV in the hotel. Then I watched the rest, including the main event, Sunday morning while waiting for our flight back to Georgia.
And let me say—if you’re into the UFC, this was a great card. Khamzat Chimaev put on a clinic against Du Plessis. He just wrestled him to the ground and controlled the whole fight. I was expecting a bit more back-and-forth, but Khamzat did exactly what he’s known for: total domination. Fights three and four on the card had some wild finishes, too. Worth a watch if you’re a fan.
Now we’re home, and Mr. Ted is still rocking the cone like a warrior. He’s doing better than we ever expected. That first morning surprise with the water bowl kind of set the tone—he’s adapting, healing, and making us laugh in the process.
