UFC Excitement, Mystery Texts, and Cleaning Out the Garage

Written by Shane Smith | Jun 10, 2026 11:24:15 AM

This week was one of those weeks where there wasn't necessarily one big thing that stood out, but there were a lot of smaller things that kept us busy. We've been looking forward to some upcoming events, dealing with a few strange and mildly frustrating situations, and continuing our efforts to clear out years' worth of accumulated stuff around the house. It feels like every time we cross one project off the list, another one appears, but that's probably just part of life. Between family, work, and trying to stay organized, the week stayed plenty full.

Counting Down to UFC 250

If you know me, you know I'm a big UFC fan.

We're getting excited about UFC 250, and if you've looked at the card, it is absolutely stacked. There are a ton of great fights lined up, and it looks like one of those events where almost every matchup could be entertaining.

The fact that it's taking place in Washington, D.C., and tied to the White House makes it even more interesting. I still can't quite wrap my head around how that all came together, but it's definitely unique.

The biggest decision right now is whether to have a bunch of people over to watch it or keep it small with just me, Sam, and maybe a couple of other people.

The card looks so good that either way should be a great night.

The Mystery Toyota Text Messages Continue

One thing that continues to puzzle us is the stream of text messages we get from a Toyota dealership.

The strange part is that we do own a Toyota, but we don't get it serviced there.

We've tried multiple times to get it corrected. Every time a message comes through about repairs or maintenance, we think we've finally figured out what's causing it, but then another one arrives a few weeks later.

The latest text had me asking Holly what was going on since she handles most of the vehicle maintenance scheduling.

Her response?

"I have no idea."

So the mystery continues.

One of the Odd Things About Kids Moving Back Home

As Sam settles back in after college, one thing caught me off guard.

Packages started arriving that weren't for Holly or me.

That sounds simple, but when you're used to years of knowing exactly who every package belongs to, it's a strange adjustment.

Now boxes show up with Sam's name on them, and it reminds me that he's not just visiting. He's officially back home while he works and gets ready for the next chapter.

It's one of those little things you don't really think about until it happens.

Patriotic Energy Drinks and Dad Beer

I came across a Fourth of July-themed Monster Energy can this week.

I didn't buy one, but the design definitely caught my attention. Since Holly's birthday falls on the Fourth of July, I always seem to notice patriotic-themed products this time of year.

Not long after that, I spotted something called "Dad Beer."

Again, I didn't try it.

Honestly, I couldn't tell if it was a joke gift, a novelty product, or an actual beer brand that people genuinely enjoy.

If you've had it before, I'd love to know whether it's actually good or just a clever marketing idea.

The Ongoing Mission to Declutter

The other major project this week has been cleaning and organizing around the house.

Holly and I have been trying to get rid of things we no longer need, whether that means donating them, selling them, or simply throwing them away.

This weekend we tackled part of the garage.

It's amazing how much stuff accumulates over the years.

We found items that dated back to when the kids were in middle school. Some of it had been used heavily, some of it no longer worked, and some of it simply wasn't ever going to be used again.

A lot of those things have probably been sitting there for five or six years.

There's still more to go, but every box that leaves the garage feels like progress.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it was a good week.

We're looking forward to some great UFC fights, continuing to get Sam settled back in at home, and slowly making progress on clearing out years of accumulated clutter.

Sometimes the biggest accomplishments aren't the exciting ones. Sometimes it's simply making a little more room, getting a little more organized, and enjoying the small moments along the way.

Hope everyone else had a great week as well. Talk to you soon.
