Going Out of Business, UFC 250, and a Trip Down Memory Lane
This week was mostly a Peachtree City week for Holly and me. We spent most of our time around town, running errands, checking out a few places, and just doing the normal things that come with everyday life.
One thing that caught us by surprise was seeing a local business closing its doors.
Another Peachtree City Business Calls It Quits
We stopped by the liquor store near Kroger and immediately noticed signs announcing they were going out of business.
What made it interesting is that I remember when they first opened a few years ago. There was quite a bit of discussion around it at the time because they had to get special approval from the city due to their proximity to a nearby school. They invested a lot in the property, remodeled the building, and seemed to have big plans for the location.
Over time, though, it felt like the inventory slowly started shrinking. Then they divided the building and brought in another business to occupy part of the space. Eventually, the liquor store itself seemed to carry less and less inventory.
Now they're closing completely.
It's always a little surprising when you watch the full life cycle of a business happen right in front of you. One day, it's the new place everyone is talking about, and a few years later, it's gone.
Remember Glamour Shots?
As part of our ongoing effort to clean up and organize the house, we've been sorting through old boxes and forgotten items.
One of the things I came across was an old Glamour Shots photo of my cousin Jacqueline.
I don't think I'd seen it in years.
Finding it immediately took me back to the 1990s.
For anyone who remembers, Glamour Shots were a huge deal back then. They were usually located in malls, and people would go in for professional makeup, fancy outfits, dramatic lighting, and a full photo shoot experience.
Looking back, I'm not even sure some of the pictures looked much like the people in them. Everybody was so dressed up and photographed in a way that made them look like they belonged on the cover of a magazine.
But at the time, it was a big event.
I remember people being excited to get their photos back, showing them to friends and family, and talking about how great everyone looked. Seeing that old picture brought back a lot of memories from that era.
Looking for a Place to Go Out
Holly and I were also looking for somewhere local to go spend an evening.
I found a place nearby that advertised live music, DJs, and what looked like a pretty lively atmosphere. We were actually considering checking it out until I happened to notice one small detail on their Facebook page.
They allow smoking indoors.
Unfortunately, with my allergies, that's pretty much a deal breaker.
So that crossed the location off the list.
If anybody knows of a great spot around Peachtree City with live music, dancing, and no indoor smoking, I'd love to hear recommendations.
We're always looking for new places to try.
UFC 250 Delivered
One of the highlights of the weekend was definitely UFC 250.
I've been looking forward to this card for a while, but I honestly didn't realize how big the event had become until I started seeing all the coverage surrounding it. The crowd looked enormous, and I even saw reports claiming the event drew viewership numbers larger than the Super Bowl. I don't know if that's completely accurate, but it certainly shows how much attention the event received.
We ended up keeping things relatively small at the house.
My brother and his wife came over, one of my friends stopped by, Sam was there, and one of his friends joined us as well. It wasn't a huge watch party, but it was enough people to make it fun.
The only downside was the timing.
Since it was on a Sunday night and started at eight o'clock, it ran much later than I would have preferred. Personally, I'm still a fan of Saturday fight nights.
That said, the event itself was outstanding.
A Wild Night of Fights
If you're a UFC fan, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
It felt like every fight ended with a finish.
I don't think many fights made it to the judges, and most seemed to be over within the first couple of rounds.
There were plenty of surprises.
I was disappointed to see Michael Chandler lose. I've always enjoyed watching him fight, and it feels like things just haven't quite gone his way since the Conor McGregor fight never materialized.
I was also disappointed to see Derek Lewis come up short.
On the positive side, Bo Nickal picked up a win, which was great to see.
One of the biggest surprises of the night was seeing Alex Pereira get knocked out. That wasn't something I expected at all. He just didn't seem like himself. Whether it was an off night or something else, he didn't look like the dominant fighter we're used to seeing.
The main event was fantastic as well. Justin delivered a tremendous performance against Ilia Topuria, and the entire fight lived up to the hype.
Overall, it was one of those cards where almost every fight delivered.
Boot Barn, Line Dancing, and Family Vacation Planning
While running errands this week, we stopped by Boot Barn to have a couple of hats cleaned and reshaped.
While we were there, we noticed signs advertising line dancing classes.
That got us talking about finding more things to do locally and maybe checking out some places that offer dancing or live entertainment.
At the same time, we're also beginning to plan a larger family vacation.
When you start trying to coordinate schedules for parents, siblings, spouses, kids, and in-laws, things get complicated pretty quickly.
Right now, we're looking at lake houses somewhere in North Georgia or Southern North Carolina where everybody can gather together for a few days.
Finding a place large enough for everyone is the challenge.
Luna Versus the Deer
Luna continues to enjoy life at home.
This week, one of the deer showed up near our backyard again.
What followed was essentially a game of chase.
The deer stayed outside the fence while Luna stayed inside, and they spent quite a while running back and forth along the fence line together.
Luna thought it was the greatest thing ever.
Eventually, we had to convince her that playtime was over and bring her back inside.
Pokémon Cards Are Apparently Still Huge
One thing I learned this week is that Pokémon cards remain incredibly popular.
And when I say popular, I mean people are still lining up early to buy new releases before stores sell out.
Some of the products are immediately being resold online for higher prices, and the entire market seems far bigger than I realized.
We stopped into a trading card shop near my office and were amazed at how much inventory they had dedicated to Pokémon cards and collectibles.
Apparently, that market is still going very strong.
Changes Around Town
One final thing happening around Peachtree City is the expansion of one of the golf cart paths.
While the finished project will probably be nice, the construction process has been pretty significant.
They've cleared a large number of trees, and right now the area looks more like a construction zone than the familiar path people are used to seeing.
From what I've heard, the project could continue for quite a while, so it's something we'll all be watching over the coming months.
Final Thoughts
Overall, it was a good week.
We saw a little bit of everything, from businesses closing and old photographs resurfacing to UFC fights, family vacation planning, and Luna's ongoing adventures with local wildlife.
Sometimes the most interesting weeks aren't the ones with one big event. They're the ones filled with a dozen smaller stories that somehow all come together.
Hope everyone had a great week, and I'll talk to you soon.
