Why I Had to Reshoot My Entire Video Marketing Plan

Man, this past week was a mix of productivity, problem-solving, and a few unexpected surprises. First off, I had to check all my continuing education (CLE) requirements for the year and make sure I was staying on track with deadlines. Some of the states I’m licensed in have deadlines as early as March 1, so I had to dig in and figure out exactly what I still needed to complete. Turns out, I was short a couple of credits, which meant I had to find a couple of courses to take and get those done.

Now, it’s not that I mind taking the courses themselves—it’s more about the hassle of finding the right ones. Some states have specific requirements, like needing two hours of professionalism or a mandatory one-hour technology credit to stay updated on legal software and cybersecurity changes. It’s not like you can just take any legal class and be done with it; you’ve got to find ones that match the requirements. I know continuing education is important, and honestly, I think it’s a good thing across all industries. It’s just always a little frustrating when you realize you’ve let the year slip away and now you’re scrambling to get everything done on time.

One of my favorite ways to handle CLEs is by going to conferences and knocking everything out in one go. But with all the advances in e-learning, I can do a lot from home now, which I prefer when I’m busy. The whole online education industry has grown so much over the past decade. My dad, for example, has been teaching remotely for a university in Mississippi for years—while living in Georgia. He’s been doing that long before COVID, and it’s crazy to me how far online learning has come. These days, I like taking CLEs on demand because it lets me submit credits for all three states I’m licensed in without the extra hassle of traveling.

Aside from that, I spent a ton of time this week reshooting videos for marketing. And let me tell you, this was a great reminder of why having an expert in your corner is so valuable. We’ve been working on some marketing and video content, but we weren’t seeing the results we wanted. So I reached out to someone in one of my coaching groups who specializes in video marketing. In just 30 minutes, he gave me a full action plan—eight key changes we needed to make. That kind of insight saved me months of trial and error. Sometimes, just getting an expert’s perspective can help you skip so many frustrating steps and move forward a lot faster.

Of course, that meant I had to go back and redo some of the videos. I shot a bunch of footage, only to realize I hadn’t gotten the right angles or messaging, so I had to go back through and reshoot everything over the weekend. It’s one of those things where you think you’re done, but then you realize there’s always a way to tweak and improve things. But that’s part of the process, and ultimately, I know the extra effort will pay off.

February is shaping up to be a really busy month. I’ll be in Charlotte for a week, then back home in time for Valentine’s Day with my wife. Right after that, I fly out for a business event in Miami at the end of the week. And then, Holly and I are heading to Japan for the last week of February and the first few days of March. This time, we’re staying just in Tokyo, which should be interesting because we’re doing Airbnbs instead of the traditional hotels we’ve stayed in before. It’ll be a different vibe—maybe we’ll love it, or maybe we’ll realize we prefer hotels. Either way, it’ll be an adventure, and we’re excited to experience Tokyo in a new way. The trip is coming up fast, so there’s a lot of planning and prep to do—figuring out where we want to go, what we want to see, and making sure we’ve got all the logistics covered.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, I also found out I have squirrels in my attic this week. That was a fun surprise. I was walking on my treadmill when I heard scratching in the walls. Turns out, both flying squirrels and regular squirrels got in through a builder’s gap between the roof and the house and decided to make themselves at home. So I had to call some professionals out to trap and relocate them. Now, we’re also working on sealing up the entry points so they don’t come back.

It’s just another reminder that home maintenance never really ends. It seems like as soon as you fix one thing, another issue pops up. I once read that homeowners should expect to spend about 1% of their home’s value each year on maintenance and repairs. Some people keep up with that, some don’t—but when you don’t, those problems tend to pile up fast. I feel like every homeowner has had that moment where they put something off, and then suddenly, they’re dealing with a much bigger and more expensive issue than if they had just handled it earlier.

Overall, though, it was a pretty quiet week—just catching up from the craziness of December and January. I’m back to working out consistently, sticking to my coach’s diet plan, and trying to get rid of that holiday weight. Looking ahead, I’m hoping we can get through February without any snow days slowing things down.
