When Your Body Forces a Reset

When Life Forces a Recovery Week

Every now and then life forces you to slow down whether you want to or not. That is exactly what happened last week.

What started as a normal weekend quickly turned into an unexpected recovery week. One minute everything felt fine. The next, it felt like someone flipped a switch.

And suddenly the week looked very different than planned.

When Getting Sick Sneaks Up on You

The strange part about getting sick is how often it feels like it appears out of nowhere.

In reality, the signs were there.

Holly had already been sick earlier in the week. By Tuesday or Wednesday she was dealing with it, and for several days everything seemed fine on my end. No symptoms. No fatigue. Nothing that suggested I was about to catch it.

Then Sunday morning arrived.

Waking up that morning felt like hitting a wall. Completely stuffed up. Low energy. Mentally foggy. It was the kind of sickness where even thinking clearly felt difficult.

Sunday through Tuesday were the toughest days.

It was one of those illnesses where you know you are not functioning at full capacity. Energy disappears. Focus becomes difficult. Even simple tasks feel heavier than normal.

The Strange Experience of Brain Fog

One of the most noticeable parts of the week was the brain fog.

It is a strange feeling when your mind simply does not feel sharp. You try to focus, but thoughts move slower than usual. Conversations require more effort. Even routine decisions feel like they take longer.

Wednesday was probably the most frustrating day because physically things were improving, but mentally everything still felt sluggish.

By halfway through Wednesday things started to improve.

Thursday felt closer to normal.

But energy still lagged behind.

Slowly Getting Energy Back

Image-27Recovery rarely happens all at once.

Instead, it comes in stages.

First the worst symptoms disappear. Then the brain fog begins to lift. Then gradually the energy starts to return.

By Friday things finally started to feel normal again. The body was still recovering, but it was clear the worst part of the week had passed.

One thing that helped was simply resting more than usual.

More sleep.

More downtime.

And fewer expectations.

Sometimes the best thing you can do when your body is recovering is allow it the time it needs.

Cabin Fever Sets In

After several days inside the house, the biggest challenge became something else entirely.

Cabin fever.

Four straight days without leaving the house can start to feel long. Even if you are resting, eventually you want to step outside, see something different, and just get some fresh air.

By the time energy started returning, it was time to get out of the house for a bit.

Nothing complicated.

Just a change of scenery.

A Simple Night Out Helps Reset

One of the first outings after feeling better was a visit to a favorite Mexican restaurant.

It did not have to be anything fancy. The point was simply to get out and enjoy being back in the world after several days of being stuck inside.

Sometimes a simple meal out can feel like a big reset.

Later in the week there was another comfort choice that worked surprisingly well while recovering: miso soup.

Normally when people get sick they reach for chicken noodle soup or vegetable soup. For whatever reason, that was not appealing this time.

Instead, miso soup turned out to be the perfect warm alternative.

Light, simple, and comforting.

Sometimes recovery is about finding the little things that help you feel normal again.

Ranch Time and Fresh Air

Image-24Image-26By Friday the weather was nice enough to spend time outdoors.

That meant heading out to the ranch for some fresh air and relaxation.

Holly decided it was a good time to pull out her bow and do some practice shooting. It had been a while since she had used it, but she picked it back up quickly.

And she was still impressively accurate.

Spending time outdoors after being stuck inside all week was exactly what was needed. The combination of fresh air, sunshine, and quiet space can do a lot to recharge your energy.

Looking at Alternatives to Grass

Image-25While relaxing and scrolling through different things online, another interesting topic kept appearing.

Ground cover alternatives.

Ads have been popping up constantly for alternatives to traditional grass lawns. Things like clover lawns, blue laurel ground cover, and other low maintenance options.

The idea is appealing.

Less mowing.

Less maintenance.

Potentially less water usage.

But it raises an interesting question.

Are these alternatives truly practical, or is traditional grass still the best option most of the time?

That is something worth exploring more in the coming weeks.

The Movie That Wasn’t Nearby

Another small disappointment during the week came from something that seemed like a simple plan.

Watching the new Peaky Blinders movie.

After some excitement about it coming out soon, a quick search revealed something unexpected. The closest theater showing the movie was over an hour away.

Not exactly convenient.

So that plan may have to wait until the movie eventually appears on streaming platforms.

Sometimes the easiest plan turns out to require a little more patience.

Getting Back to Normal

By the end of the week everything finally started returning to normal.

Energy levels improved.

Focus returned.

And the routine started picking back up again.

Even though several workdays were missed, a couple meetings still happened during the recovery period. Contributions were limited during the worst of the sickness, but sometimes that is simply part of taking care of yourself.

Health always has to come first.

The Next Challenge: Pollen Season

Just as one seasonal challenge disappears, another one arrives.

Pollen season.

Anyone living in the Southeast knows exactly what that means. The yellow dust that covers cars, sidewalks, and practically everything outside is right around the corner.

So while the cold may be gone, the next round of seasonal irritation is about to begin.

Hopefully with a little more energy this time around.
